Yes, there is no such thing as a free lunch any more: much less FREE radio time on an al station, but think about your opportunities.
I Produce and Host my show, Tilley Talks Travel and like many others pay for my air time, however, I don't pay from y own pocket, my advertisers and sponsos pay and sometimes I even make a dollar or two for my time, effort and all of the research that goes into a live 1 hour show each week.
Your advertisers and sponsors can come from absolutely anywhere, relevant to your show or completely off the wall!!
The important thing is that you approach them with a plan and a prospectus! (Keep it simple)
Think about it, if your hour of exposure costs you $100.00 and you were able to get 2 sponsors for $50.00 ach and 2 advertisers for $25.00, you will be accumulating $50.00 each week to be able to continue for a while in case one of them drops out.
$50.00 per week is LESS than most of us are paying to fill our cars with gas fo a week and $25.00 only gets half a tank or a cheap lunch for 2.
When you present the opportunity to any small local business for them to incease their business for less than the cost of a tank of gas or a modest lunch for them and a client, advertising and sponsorship becomes a really easy sell!!

You are usually restricted to one car door magnet at a time, 1 pen 1 tee shirt, 1 hat, 25 letterheads, 200 business cards etc, but oder as much free stuff as you can every time and you will end up with enough stuff to be really useful.
Sorry about rambling on for so long, but when I received my second free car door magnet and attached them to my vehicle I receivd 6 inquieies about advertising in the first 7 days!!! They are still working!!
The other neat thing is that you can co-ordinate all of the stuff you order, so you have a coherent marketing appearance. You can also upload your own logo or photos, but that usually incures a modest charge as opposed th FREE if you use their stock designs.

You say small radio stations are free. But you also said you worked at one and it had a small range so why would you want to do another one at a small station?
My experience has been that every station asks for either sponsors or a fee.
What frustrates me is that I have no callers and only a handful of people listening to the archives. And my guests give away prizes to boot. I would love to be on the air but it seems an impossible goal.

You are looking for a producer? I thought you first look for a new station and the producer comes along with the package.
I wish I could be on the air but everyone wants money. I saw on one site "Looking for radio hosts" and called the station's president. He was very friendly but charges $100 a show. Nothing is free it seems. I have a show on Blog Talk Radio that is free but no callers. What a tradeoff!!
